Course Description:
Covers the business and economic history of the modern Dominican Republic through lectures from faculty at the partner organization, Esperanza, and the partner university, Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, as well as Northeastern lecturers. Covers the country’s transition from postcolonialism to its present economic and political situation. Offers students an opportunity to learn how the Dominican Republic has overcome the struggles of its colonial past and become one of the leading emerging economies of the Caribbean with a flourishing business community and global trade climate. Includes readings in economics, law, history, politics, and culture. Includes tours around the old Colonial Quarters in Santo Domingo and visits to sugar refineries, former slave lodges, and museums.
