Course Title:
Microfinance and Microenterprise in the Dominican Republic
Course Description:
Utilizes case study methods, student presentations, discussion groups, and research to illustrate effective methods of microfinance as a poverty-alleviating tool. Offers students an opportunity to embark on extensive research on microfinance institutions, such as Esperanza, Fund San Miguel Arcangel, and Banco ADEMI. Requires students to give presentations on existing microfinance institutions or banks, such as Grameen Bank, ACCION network, Root Capital, and others. Includes a field experience component in the Dominican Republic, which involves identifying village banking sites, meeting with entrepreneurs, interviewing applicants or potential borrowers, assistance with microbusiness start-ups, and distributing microfinance loan capital in the creation of a village bank system
