Course Title:
Sociology of Mental Health and Illness
Course Description:
Provides an introduction to mental health and mental illness. Presents a number of perspectives on mental health and illness, including biological, genetic, and psychological approaches; however, the course focuses on the role of social factors in mental health and mental health care by examining the role of social factors in the etiology, course, and treatment of mental illness. Students have an opportunity to learn about the social consequences of mental illness, such as stigma, and explore ways to prevent these consequences. In addition, prevention, rehabilitation, and recovery are discussed. The social and political contexts within which mental health and mental illness occur are discussed as well as the role of professionals. This course is taught with attention to an interdisciplinary perspective.
