Aging and Illness
Course Description:
Retired August 31, 2008. Focuses on the distinction between normal aging and disease. Covers age-related physiological/pathophysiological changes at the level of the individual, organ system, organ, tissue, and cell. Includes a consideration of the lexicon of aging, major biological theories of aging, as well as alteration of physiological parameters in aging. Emphasis is on disease states commonly encountered in older adults. Also includes psychosocial theories of aging, discussion of “successful aging,” and the physical and psychosocial risks of hospitalization for the elderly. Presents characteristics of the ill older adult including acute confusion. Considers health promotion and levels of disease prevention in the geriatric client. Uses a case-based approach to develop critical-thinking skills related to the pragmatics of care for the elderly who are ill.
