Course Title:
Battered Women and the Law
Course Description:
Focuses on the dynamics of violence in intimate relationships and on the cultural context of abusive relationships. Examines family law, alternative dispute resolution, abuse prevention legislation, criminal law and the criminal justice system, recent developments in tort law, the new federal Violence Against Women Act, and violence against women as a violation of international human rights. Considers the challenges advocates for battered women face and innovative responses to the needs of battered women by public and private agencies. Uses research in history, anthropology, sociology, and psychology, as well as law. In a discussion seminar-style format, emphasizes active participation by all class members. Uses role-plays to focus issues for discussion. Occasionally, guests are invited to join the class. Supplements written materials with relevant film footage.
