Course Description:
Covers the basics of the law of nonprofit organizations. The universe of “nonprofits” includes entities as different as community-based social service or economic development organizations and religious institutions. Among the topics covered are the history and rationale of nonprofit organizations, issues of definition and classification, choice of organizational form, internal governance considerations, the role of federal tax exemption, and laws relevant to fiscal management (i.e., regulation of charitable solicitation and endowment management and the taxation of unrelated business income). Involves significant tax and corporate law components, but there are no prerequisites.
