Course Title:
Immigration Law
Course Description:
Designed to give the student an overview of U.S. immigration laws with special emphasis on the Immigration Act of 1990. Focuses on the day-to-day practice of immigration law, including an examination of the substantive and procedural aspects of this practice, and a historical analysis of the changes in our immigration laws and policies. Examines the interrelationship of administrative law, constitutional law, foreign law, federal court jurisdiction, international law, and criminal law. Covers the various nonimmigrant and immigrant classifications, the preference system for immigrants, the difference between exclusion and deportation hearings, statutory grounds for exclusion and deportation, Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights of aliens, political asylum applications, U.S. citizenship and naturalization, administrative and judicial review, the Refugee Act of l980, and the new political asylum regulations.
