Course Title:
Calculus 1
Course Description:
Retired August 31, 2005; replaced by MTH 4241 in the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Reviews topics of precalculus including conics and trigonometry. Defines general function operations, studies limits, derivatives of single variable functions including algebraic and trigonometric functions, general rules of differentiation, and derivatives of exponential, logarithmic, and inverse trigonometric functions. Applies differentiation to velocity, acceleration, related rates, physics, Newton’s method, optimization, and curve sketching. Introduces beginning concepts of integration and solution of problems solved by simple differential equations. Examines Riemann sum and the fundamental theorem of calculus. Stresses applications to areas, volumes, and rectilinear motion. Concludes with integration by “u” substitution and numerical integration. Requires students to purchase a graphing calculator, the make and model to be specified at the first class meeting.
