Course Title:
Environment in the Age of Discovery
Course Description:
Explores the statement “There are two Europes and there are two Africas,” which describes the essence of this course, the exchange of people and all of the materials found in nature that we associate with people. Their migration across the Atlantic since the “discovery” of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492 has been one of the most significant continuing events in human history. We may dispute the notion of discovery by Europeans in the fifteenth century, since many millions of people inhabited North and South America at the time of Columbus’s arrival. His arrival, however, signaled the beginning of an exchange that has never ended.
