Geographic Information Systems
Course Description:
Retired August 31, 2007; replaced with ENV U560. Introduces students to the use of a geographic information system (GIS), and explores the practical application of GIS to support geographic inquiry, analysis, and decision making. Topics include spatial data collection; data accuracy and uncertainty; cartographic principles and data visualization; geographic analysis; and legal, economic, and ethical issues associated with the use of a GIS. Students gain hands-on experience with a leading commercial GIS software package. Case studies from geology, environmental science, urban planning, architecture, social studies, and engineering are investigated.
