Medical Monitoring/Pharmacology
Course Description:
Retired August 31, 2005. Offers a detailed understanding of the equipment and techniques used to monitor critical physiologic parameters in the perioperative cardiac surgical setting. Emphasizes electrocardiography; transduction of arterial, venous, and intracardiac pressures; and anticoagulation, hemostasis, and temperature measurement. Augments lectures with text readings and scientific literature. Uses a problem-based format for the remainder of the course, consisting of one hour of lecture followed by one and a half hours of case conference, to enhance the student’s clinical decision making and problem solving. Focuses on the pharmacologic agents and protocols unique to the cardiac surgical theater. Topics include agents affecting circulation, agents used in the conduct of cardiac anesthesia and cardiopulmonary bypass, and new frontiers in cardiac surgical pharmacology.
