Course Description:
Retired August 31, 2005. Continues CES G250, building on the previous course. Explores in detail the physiology and pathophysiology of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Covers the metabolic bases of tissue ischemia, followed by techniques of limiting ischemic tissue damage during CPB. Examines the pathophysiologic humeral response to CPB and techniques of modifying it. Offers a detailed analysis of heart failure and associated medical and mechanical support therapies, including IABP, ventricular assist, and ECMO. Also covers the special considerations of neonatal and pediatric CPB.
