Course Description:
Focuses on debates surrounding the origin of the gender division of labor and the family. Examines gender relations and kinship dynamics including family forms in political and economic context, using examples of egalitarianism, ranked, stratified, and state-level societies. Analyzes social stratification, colonialism, and capitalist development in relation to changing gender roles, ideologies, and critically evaluates theories of the emergence of gender hierarchy.
