Course Title:
Psychological Aspects of Acute and Chronic Illness
Course Description:
Focuses on the psychological defense and coping mechanisms utilized in response to those acute and chronic illnesses that are induced by stressful environments and lifestyles, as well as those having a genetic determinant. Theoretical formulations pertaining to the etiology and prognosis of psychosomatic components of illness, such as conversion reactions, somatisizing in response to stress, pain, anxiety, and the psychophysiological adaptation to chronic illness. Suggestions for management of patients within the various contexts of the family and help-giving environments are culled through class discussion.
