Course Title:
Nursing with Vulnerable Population
Course Description:
Addresses the care of patients and families in communities from a nursing process, epidemiological, and prevention frame of reference. Students analyze the factors that contribute to vulnerability in selected population groups and the relative costs related to levels of prevention. Enables the student to understand the value and use of assessment from the point of view of human biology, maturation and aging, physiologic function, physical, psychological, and social environment, and lifestyle. Examine types of community-based strategies to serve the underserved populations that live in urban areas. Includes political and economic influences on strategies. Specific areas of care within and between communities that are examined are: 1) family as client, 2) assessing communities and target groups, 3) care of older clients, 4) care of the homeless, 5) care of children in school, 6) substance abuse, and 7) violence. Helps the student define the role of the community health nurse as a primary-care provider, case manager, deliverer of nursing care, coordinator of care, collaborator, liaison between agencies, and user of nursing research.
