Course Description:
Accompanies PHY G171. Covers topics from the course through various experiments.Offers a semiclassical treatment of the thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties of crystalline solids. Examines x-ray diffraction and the reciprocal lattice, elasticity and lattice vibrations, specific heat, properties of insulators, magnetism in insulators and metals, and introduction to the band theory of metals. For students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than physics or lacking preparation in one or more of the topics covered in the required first-year graduate courses.
