Course Description:
Discusses the selection of blood donors, phlebotomy and pheresis procedures, processing requirements, donor reaction, blood components, blood substitutes, and physical characteristics of stored blood. Topics include indications for transfusion, transfusion reaction, therapeutic phlebotomy and pheresis, autologous transfusions, pediatric transfusion, massive blood replacement, extracorporeal perfusion, cardiopulmonary bypass, and dialysis. Other topics include blood-borne pathogens and the pathogenesis and physiology of conditions requiring transfusion therapy.
