Style in Technical and Scientific Communication
Course Description:
Serves as a foundational course in verbal and visual design, introducing the basic theoretical questions that students explore in later courses. Beginning by historicizing the clear style associated with technical writing, this course draws on rhetorical theory to explore the epistemological issues raised in discussions of the relationship between form and substance. By the end of the class, students develop a facility with stylistic techniques, a vocabulary for discussing and evaluating elements of visual design, a practiced ability to edit the writing of others, and a rudimentary sense of the political, legal, and ethical dimensions inherent in communication.
